Crowdfunding Impact: The Power of the Right Energy to Transform Africa

Energy is more than just power. It is possibility. It is the difference between a farmer’s produce reaching the market or going to waste. Between a woman breathing toxic smoke indoors or cooking safely. Between an artisan losing her vision or continuing her craft. Yet, for hundreds of millions of people in Africa, energy access remains out of reach.

Crowdfunding: A New Power in Development

For too long, development financing has been centralized, relying on large-scale donors and institutional funding. But crowdfunding flips the script; it allows anyone, anywhere, to be part of the solution. With as little as $5 or $10, an individual can contribute to a tangible project, knowing exactly how their money is making a difference.

This model has worked for businesses, social causes, and even political campaigns. Now, it’s time to use it for something even more fundamental: energy access.

The rise of crowdfunding has changed how people engage with global challenges, proving that collective action - small contributions from many - can drive transformational change. Switch It! – The Power of the Right Energy(link is external) is harnessing this potential by being UNDP Africa’s first regional crowdfunding campaign to bring clean energy solutions to women across the continent.

Switch It! is proof that clean energy solutions don’t have to be a distant dream, they can happen now. Five women in five African countries have identified real, practical solutions to local challenges, and with enough support, they could transform entire communities.

Clean energy is the single most important investment we can make for Africa’s future. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) estimates that expanding clean energy access could create up to 4.5 million jobs in Africa by 2030. Meanwhile, reducing reliance on harmful fuels like charcoal and firewood could save 500,000 lives annually by cutting down air pollution according to the World Health Organization.

Five Women, Five Countries, One Energy Revolution

The Switch It! projects demonstrate that clean energy is more than just power: it is a force that unlocks new opportunities, accelerates development, and drives lasting change.

🇦🇴 Angola: Isabel’s community could cook safely using solar kitchens, reducing reliance on charcoal, which causes deforestation and deadly indoor air pollution.(link is external)

🇧🇼 Botswana: Mrs. Kutsira and other women artisans could receive protective glasses, eye surgery, and solar-powered workshops, ensuring their craft - and their income -continues.(link is external)

🇧🇫 Burkina Faso: Mamounette could plant thousands of trees, fighting desertification and restoring farmland that sustains millions.(link is external)

🇹🇩 Chad: Ernestine could use solar-powered cold storage to keep food fresh, preventing the 40% of produce lost due to lack of refrigeration.(link is external)

🇿🇲 Zambia: Virginia’s village could use clean energy solutions to reduce human-wildlife conflicts, saving lives and preserving ecosystems.(link is external)

These are not abstract ideas; they are tangible projects that need solid support. And with crowdfunding, people can fund change directly. They don’t need to wait for bureaucratic processes or massive investments.

The Right Energy for the Right Future

Beyond the money, Switch It!(link is external) is about shifting mindsets. It’s about showing that solutions exist today: not in distant policy discussions or development plans, but in real, actionable innovations.

This is why the power of the right energy matters. Not just electricity, but the energy of collective action. The energy of people believing in solutions. The energy of crowdfunding driving real change.
